HRSA HPSA — Health Professional Shortage Area
Published by Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA)· monthly
Federal designations of geographic areas with insufficient primary care, dental, or mental health professionals.
In Detail
Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) designations are issued by HRSA to identify communities with too few healthcare providers relative to population needs. Three categories: primary care, dental health, and mental health. HPSA status drives federal program eligibility (NHSC loan repayment, Medicare bonus payments, J-1 visa waivers for international medical graduates). ValiFit incorporates HPSA designations into the Health composite — areas with fewer providers per 1,000 residents and HPSA status get lower Health ROI scores, surfacing the federal "underserved" signal directly on town and property pages.
